Echo Show Clock System

In just six months, I defined and led the end-to-end design and creative direction of a modular clockface system for Echo Show devices, now featured on millions of screens globally. With over 700 customizable day and night designs, the system delivers billions of impressions, blending personal expression with brand consistency at scale. This work elevated customer satisfaction and reinforced Alexa’s in-home presence as both useful and beautiful. For these launches I partnered with the Alexa Marketing team to craft clock-forward packaging that would be used globally across Alexa Device displays in stores like Best Buy, Target, and Walmart.

Overtime, I transitioned from designing the foundation of the clocks system, to leading the overall creative direction. I got the opportunity to work with a phenomenal team of UX, Visual, and Motion designers to scale the work out across different experiences and hardware types. Each application of the system required flexibility to scale across rectangular, vertical, square, and circular display formats. 

The system's success and modular flexibility enabled its extension to Echo Spot, Tablets, and Fire TV. This system reinforced a cohesive visual language across Amazon’s ambient product ecosystem. It remains in active use today as a primary selling point of the Echo Show 5 and Echo Spot products. The modular system is future-proofed by its adaptable architecture and ability to scale across a variety of hardware types.

Telling the time is one of the most frequent uses of the Echo Show, making the clock display a key function and selling point of the device. 

02   Different Background Combinations & Illustrations


I ended up illustrating a large portion of the designs that are above. Each theme has between 6-12 background options. I had a great time embracing some of the hardware constraints by using new image formats.

There were also a blend of digital and analog display formats across the templates. We explored a variety of motion transitions for each clock set as well.

The system continues to scale across emerging Echo products. I got to lead ideation workshops, brainstorming, and leadership review sessions to create new sets of clock types across our team. Below, you can see some examples of how the clock theme and color personalization is one of the core features of the Echo Spot.
