Two close friends asked me to design a monogram for their wedding. They were planning a Halloween ceremony and wanted something that reflected their shared aesthetic: dark, romantic, and unapologetically gothic.
The brief was deceptively simple: create a monogram that felt ornate yet restrained. It needed to embody “Till Death do us Part” without feeling stereotypical. It also had to translate beyond paper into a large-scale logo painted onto a coffin.
I grounded the work in a heavy blackletter tradition to reflect the couple’s morbid sophistication. Rather than defaulting to an existing typeface, I drew custom blackletter options. I tested multiple variations of the “R” across flat, light-reactive, dark, and textured treatments. The goal was to ensure the mark could hold presence across print and wood as centerpiece. Through iteration, I landed on a flat version that could be easily translated across different treatments.
The final monogram was painted onto a handmade coffin constructed by Jonhenry. Standing over eight feet tall, the piece became the centerpiece of the ceremony and a permanent fixture in their home. Under blacklight, the mark glows as a centerpiece.
